6 Seasonal Essential Oil Blends for Sleeping in the Summer

by Pam Silvia

Often, summer break enables us to nix a healthy sleep schedule. As you’re trying to get your groove (and hours of sleep) back, try an essential oil pillow spray!

Essential oils are aromatic compounds that, when inhaled, stimulate the limbic system, which controls breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure—all culminating in a calming, physical effect. To help you achieve faster and deeper sleep, we compiled some DIY pillow spray recipes. And to sweeten the deal, we’ve got seasonal essential oil blends that will remind you of summer.

In addition to essential oils, for every recipe, you’ll need:

  • A 4-ounce amber-glass spray bottle
  • A pinch of Epsom salt
  • Distilled water and high-proof vodka, mixed, to top off your bottle

Now, let’s get started!

1. Lavender Dreams

The protagonist of this recipe has an exceptional track record when it comes to helping people catch up on their ZZZs and feel relieved from stress—it’s no wonder why lavender is included in many linen sprays and baby products.

To make this pleasantly fragrant pillow spray, use a dropper to pick up 17 drops of lavender essential oil, 17 drops of lime essential oil, and 7 drops of spearmint essential oil. The sprinkling of citrus is perfectly reminiscent of sipping lemonade by the pool.

You’ll want to make this fresh scent last—a splash of high-proof vodka in your amber-glass bottle should do the trick.

2. Waste Not, Bergamot

Lean into the spirit of the season with an essential oil blend for sleep that is equal parts sweet and sour. The key ingredient for this citrusy recipe is bergamot. Said to help steady heart rate, lower blood pressure, and reduce feelings of anxiety, bergamot essential oil could be the answer to your insomnia.

Simply pipe 13 drops of grapefruit essential oil, 13 drops of orange essential oil, 7 drops of lemon essential oil, and 7 drops of bergamot into your spray bottle along with a dusting of Epsom salt, and a pour of your vodka-water solution.

Spritz your concoction on your pillow, and wake up feeling energized the next day!

3. Out of the (Cedar)woods

This seasonal essential oil recipe reminds us of a scenic nature hike—close your eyes, take a whiff, and you’ll see what we mean. For an evergreen scent that evokes a breath of fresh mountain air, add 13 drops of each of the following essential oils: cedarwood, lavender, and spruce.

Cedarwood essential oil is the most grounding fragrance and ingredient in this recipe. Said to help prolong sleep due to the alcoholic compound cedrol, this essential oil can help catalyze a healthy sleep schedule.

As a bonus: cedarwood essential oil has been used to cleanse the scalp and soothe skin irritation, redness, and dryness. Reap these benefits by dousing your pillow with this seasonal essential oil blend—and give “beauty sleep” a new meaning.

4. Sweet Marjoram (Bah-bah-bah!)

More than just a seasoning in your spice cabinet, sweet marjoram can be harnessed as an essential oil for sleep—and a versatile one, at that. Commonly used to combat colds, infection, and indigestion, sweet marjoram essential oil has also helped stabilize the sleep schedules of overnight workers.

If you prefer spiced, warm fragrances with woodsy undertones, this essential oil blend has your back. To make this aromatherapeutic solution, pipe 13 droplets, each, of sweet marjoram, nutmeg, and mandarin essential oils into your amber-glass bottle.

Boost your immune system, help your respiratory system, and soothe your nervous system with just a couple of spritzes every night.

5. Roman Chamomile Holiday

You may not find it surprising that chamomile has a calming effect, as it is often consumed in tea as a remedy for many ailments, including uncomfortable muscle spasms, indigestion, and cold symptoms. When harnessed as an essential oil, chamomile’s benefits increase tenfold.

This seasonal essential oil blend calls for 13 drops of Roman chamomile essential oil, 13 drops of orange essential oil, 10 drops of cedarwood essential oil, and 4 drops of nutmeg essential oil combined with the Epsom salt and vodka-water mixture. The results? A sunny scent that will bring you immediate comfort and a chemical effect that will bring you long-term relief.

In addition to reducing your anxiety and promoting better sleep, Roman chamomile essential oil is believed to ward off nightmares.

6. Hello, Clary

Used not just to promote deeper slumber, a clary-sage essential oil blend can be used as a room spray to help you unwind after a long day at work. Clary sage essential oil is said to reduce cortisol hormone levels, which can relieve you of stress and help your body prepare for a good night’s rest.

For a natural sedative with a floral and spruce-like like scent, add 18 drops of white fir essential oil, 11 drops of clary sage essential oil, and 11 drops of juniper berry essential oil to your bottle with Epsom salt, and top it off with a splash of vodka and water.
