5 Ways to Get Your Guest Room Ready for the Holidays

by Waverly Wilde

1. Declutter

Most guest rooms tend to turn into giant storage closets during most of the year. Whether your guest room is filled with suitcases, extra decorations, old clothing, or hockey equipment—you’ll need to clear out the clutter before any guests arrive. Most family members might look past the junk filling up the guest space, but it’s still courteous to clear out the closet to allow proper space for clothes, shoes, travel bags, and purses.

Make sure the room is tidy and has a designated guest area carved out with the proper furniture and a comfortable mattress.

2. 'Tis the Season

You don’t want your guest bedroom to look dark and dreary—you want it to be full of life and holiday spirit. Before your friends and family arrive, place an arrangement of holiday decorations and flowers on the bedside table. You don’t need to put up a full-sized Christmas tree, but this thoughtful touch adds a hint of holiday festiveness to their living space. If they’re waking up to wreaths, candy canes, stockings, and ornaments—it’ll be hard not to get in the holiday spirit.

3. Surplus of Supplies

If your house guests are arriving from across the globe, they’ve most likely left behind their full-sized beauty and hygiene products or had them confiscated by the fine folks who work the TSA lines at the airport. Either way, consider stocking up on a variety of travel-sized products for your guests to use while they’re visiting. Stock the bedroom with extra toiletries that might have been forgotten and arrange them in a festive basket on the dresser. You can even throw the extra toothpaste, soap, and lotion in a stocking for an added holiday touch.

4. Optimal Comfort

A welcoming environment and comfy bed are key in making your houseguests feel right at home. Odds are, everyone will have a different temperature preference when sleeping at night. Some might sleep cooler and others might want to feel the heat on full blast. They probably won’t know until they wake up in the middle of the night shivering or in a deep sweat, so just in case, keep a stack of cozy blankets nearby for your guests to use as they need.

5. Knowledge is Key

If you want your visitors to be aware of the house rules or amenities you are offering, place a small card on the nightstand with all pertinent household information. This could be the Wi-Fi password, alarm code, home address, or simply a kind note welcoming them to your home. If they’re staying for an extended amount of time, leave them an extra house key so they can come and go as they please without being a burden. If your guest bedroom is clean, festive, and accommodating—you and your guests will feel completely at home. Just make sure to let your great aunt Carol know Christmas is at her house next year!
